Presentation by UNIFI at the 41st International Symposium on Combustion, Kyoto, July 2026

At the 41st International Symposium on Combustion in Kyoto, Gianmarco Lemmi presented his work “Bridging the Thickened Flame and Fine-Scales frameworks for multi-regime combustion modelling”. In this work, developed with S. Castellani, R. Meloni, and A. Andreini within the TRANSITION Project, it was proposed a unified TF–FS framework for LES of flames in which premixed and non-premixed combustion modes coexist. The model dynamically combines Thickened Flame and Fine-Scales approaches, showing promising results across several test cases and industrial applications. The presentation also sparked valuable discussions and new perspectives for future research.

Presentation by UNIFI at Turbo Expo 2026, Milan

Gianmarco Lemmi presented his work “A Unified Thickened Flame–Fine-Scales Framework for Multi-Regime Combustion Modelling: Application to an Industrial Lean-Premixed Burner” at ASME Turbo Expo, 15-19 June 2026, Milan, developed in collaboration between Università degli Studi di Firenze and Baker Hughes under the TRANSITION Project.

In this work, it is proposed a unified Thickened Flame–Fine Scales framework capable of handling different combustion regimes within a single primitive variables-based modelling approach and demonstrate its application to an industrial lean-premixed burner.

The questions and discussions following the presentation were definitely the highlight of the conference.

On 16 July 2025, the second Review Meeting of the TRANSITION Project took place in Brussels, hosted at the premises of TOUR4EU – Tuscan Organisation of Universities and Research for Europe. Our Project Manager, Alessandro Mattia, represented the consortium during a lively and productive discussion. We are pleased to report a successful review and proud of the steady progress we are making toward completing our planned activities and achieving the project’s ambitious goals.

Events

May 21st 2025, 1st TRANSITION Public Workshop, Florence

The first 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 event of the project 𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 was held on May 21st 2025 in Florence, kindly hosted at the Florence Learning Center of Baker Hughes facilities in Florence.
The event represented the planned mid-term dissemination action of the project and showcased the TRANSITION partners’ recent achievements in improving knowledge on the use of 𝗘𝗚𝗥 (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) in heavy-duty gas turbines to enable more efficient adoption of carbon capture technologies (𝗖𝗖𝗨𝗦).
Project partners presented the outcomes achieved in the first two years of the project. The workshop also saw the contributions by two external experts as Invited Speakers: Prof. Epaminondas Mastorakos, University of Cambridge, and Prof. Ward De Paepe, University of Mons.
